21 hours until showtime and I still have to write horn parts for 5 songs. Write, arrange, and have them legible enough for an 11:am rehearsal with the horn guys (one of whom I’ve never met – the the three of us will be the only rehearsal). Ha! The joys of pressure.
Also, the last gig we bent some of the songs out of shape along the way, which was fun and exciting. This is far more difficult to do with a horn section (esp one that’s never played with us). They’re reading stuff and trying to keep it together while the rest of us rock out. Not only will I have to codify a form, I’ll have to remember precisely what that is on stage. Ha!
And, it appears I have a niece and nephew who are determined to find the Key. They even called to make sure I’m good for the grand. I am. They have atlases and lyric sheets and time and focus that only being 10 and 8 (almost 9) can bring.
And no, they don’t get any extra help from me.
I’ve done a lot of performances where the band outnumbered the audience. Those suck, btw. And, for a bit, it looked like we were to have that last night. But traffic was real bad. And more people showed up. And somewhere in my mind I went from “this could be crappy” to “we’ve got nothing to lose”. This, in turn, led to changing the forms of songs mid-stream, different endings & beginnings, and other things which were fun.
This is a long winded way to say things went alright.
This week, and this week only. Past this week the band will change some. It’s a flux thing.
Wednesday 11/18
MOMO’S
618 W 6th St
6:00 – 6:45

Saturday, 11/21
RUTA MAYA
601 S Congress Ave
7:00 – 8:00
With the full 8-piece band, horns and all. Our last blast of 2009. We will cook. $5 cover.
We did. It was fun.
We were on Fox Good Day.
For all the world to see. Despite the early start time, I think we did alright.
Let me know if you want to hear us again. We’re open to nearly any kind of gig.
For those who don’t know, The Weirdo Deluxe releases an album every year. The first four were pressed in limited quantities (of 200 or so) and mostly given away. An odd way to “make it” in the music biz, I know. Breaking that mold is The Silver Key.
Anyway, I’ve been knee-deep in the next record for awhile now. Even went to Nashville and worked with some fucking killer studio players there (nope, not country). I have no idea what will make the next record, but it’ll be out in August or so (like the rest) and it’ll be just as wildly eclectic as most of the other discs. Working title “Fully Body Kiss”.
Got a piano recently and all these songs are falling out of me.
Seems to be easier to update and mention stuff this way as opposed to the journal thing.
I’ve rec’d a few emails asking about hints. Specifically if I’ve put hints on the site or in the Journal. No. I have not. The whole point of this project, this treasure hunt, is to include everything in a pre-determined package: the album. Now, it doesn’t matter if you get it all digitally or physically, but everything is there. And while I am tempted to include hints and nudges, I cannot. Ever. I am pretty sure that some people who bought in don’t visit this site. So it would be unfair for me to give out hints as that is not part of the game.
Also, I inspected the photo pretty closely (the one of my notes and drafts and such) and there’s nothing in there. I made sure of that when I laid it out, and doubly sure when I took the pic (even the high rez version).
So. No hints here. Just other crap. Right on.
So, we had our first gig a couple weeks back. 8-piece band (2 guitars, 2 keyboards, 2 saxes, bass, drums – and most of us sang, too). The response was goo. KGSR played us that day and talked up the gig and the CD.
Next week we have three more performances:
FOX 7 NEWS
Monday at 7:45 a.m.
I’ll even get a bit to talk about the treasure hunt. And I’ll see what I can do to post clips on YouTube & link ‘em here.
Weds, MOMO’S
6-6:45
A happy-hour set, where we will rock it with a 5-piece band.
Saturday, RUTA MAYA
7-8
The 8-piece band again. More horns on more songs than last time. It’s gonna smoke. Great players in the band, un-rehearsed just enough to be exciting and dangerous.
