Holy smokes, it’s almost xmas. How’d we get here so fast? Amazing. 2009 crawls to a close and I feel…. not elation, not surprise; somewhere inbetween. Winter. Yes. I feel winter. I just got invited to play a 3-song gig this wednesday at The Hole in the Wall (a smallish club in Austin). I’ve played there dozens of times, but never doing my own thing. Might be solo acoustic, or if I can convince some other folks to play along it won’t be. In any event we’re required to play at least one song with a holiday theme, and thankfully I once wrote a xmas song. It’s not a happy xmas song, but it is a rather winter one, so I suppose the vibe is right for my mood.
In other music news, I’ve been asked to mix the new record by The Silos. I’ve been a member on and off (mostly off) stretching back to 1995 or so. I’ve never thought of myself as a “mixer” but apparently Walter does. He asked and I said “Really??” and that was that. Truth be told, it’s already mixed so there’s a safety net, but it should be fun anyway.
And it looks like I’ll be joining the band Haunt for some upcoming performances. Usually I get hired as a bass player but for this I’ll be rover. Backing vocals, guitar, piano, and various noises. Great songs, too, they’re fun to listen to and learn – and I get to be a musical rover. I have no idea how that will go, but it’s nice to play dangerous once in awhile.
Then the new year and two big projects to dive into. More on that later. Cheerios.
Nice.
CDBaby sold out of CDs. Again. This makes me very happy. It’s rare that I sell out of anything anywhere; and while I’m not getting rich (HA!) this helps.
AND, it looks like a large, local retailer might be interested, too – with luck, holiday shoppers will know about it.
I am not planning, yet, to make another treasure hunt, but if I DID, I think I’ve figured out how to do it, and do it differently than this one. Not that this means anything to you as you don’t know the answer, but trust me. And I think I have a name for it. Maybe. IF….
Yes. Horn charts. Indeed they sprung. We rehearsed and we played. And all was good. I tell ya, making music with great players is such a treat. And if you missed the shows, well, you missed ‘em. I have no more booked. AND, if some do get booked, the band will change. The drummer was playing as a friend, just to sub – he’s far to busy to pick up extra work regularly. And the fantastic Whit (electric guitar) has pretty much hung up his live-work for good. He’ll continue to play on my records and whatnot, just won’t be lugging black boxes into clubs for gigs anymore.
So the band, for this last show was:
saxes: Greg Wilson, Dan Bechdolt (both from Mingo Fishtrap)
keys: Stewart Cochran, Craig Robinson
guitars: Jon Bookout, Whit Williams
drums: Stephen Belans
bass: me
And the Key? Well, people are still searching, I believe, though some of the forum chatter has died down a bit. I hope this comes back up soon – perhaps after Santa makes his deliveries.
