dog bites man

Filed under: Music, New Music News, Weirdo Deluxe, songwriting — Tags: , , , , , — admin @ 11:21 pm

I got attacked & bit by a dog. Again. This is the 4th time (I think – it might be more). I’ve been chased innumerable times, but only bitten four times. Like, broken skin bitten. This is the first time I got bitten twice, though, so that’s remarkable in it’s own way – once on the knee and once in the meat of the hand.

The dog is very kind, has never bitten anyone, a young lab mix. But apparently I bring out the biting in some animals.

Just got back from a session with Kyle, one of my favorite drummers, and George. That was cool – recorded a little ditty. And I haven’t seen Kyle since we recorded the last little ditty with George, which has since turned into a big ditty with a TON of vocal tracks. Lots and lots of fun.

I am now actively trying to contact one of the greatest living guitarists. We’ll see if I can get a message through. The message is this: Wanna play on my next album??

I have, I think, 5 gigs with The Silos over SxSW. At least one of them with Exene Cervenka. And that is rad.

And the new website has begun. The beginning has started. I’ll post more later when that is up but I spent a nice evening scanning this and that, then some time listing songs and looking through old albums. The site should have things going back to 1992 or so. Should be cool.

horn charts, and gig three

Yes. Horn charts. Indeed they sprung. We rehearsed and we played. And all was good. I tell ya, making music with great players is such a treat. And if you missed the shows, well, you missed ‘em. I have no more booked. AND, if some do get booked, the band will change. The drummer was playing as a friend, just to sub – he’s far to busy to pick up extra work regularly. And the fantastic Whit (electric guitar) has pretty much hung up his live-work for good. He’ll continue to play on my records and whatnot, just won’t be lugging black boxes into clubs for gigs anymore.

So the band, for this last show was:
saxes: Greg Wilson, Dan Bechdolt (both from Mingo Fishtrap)
keys: Stewart Cochran, Craig Robinson
guitars: Jon Bookout, Whit Williams
drums: Stephen Belans
bass: me

And the Key? Well, people are still searching, I believe, though some of the forum chatter has died down a bit. I hope this comes back up soon – perhaps after Santa makes his deliveries.

Momo’s performance

I’ve done a lot of performances where the band outnumbered the audience. Those suck, btw. And, for a bit, it looked like we were to have that last night. But traffic was real bad. And more people showed up. And somewhere in my mind I went from “this could be crappy” to “we’ve got nothing to lose”. This, in turn, led to changing the forms of songs mid-stream, different endings & beginnings, and other things which were fun.

This is a long winded way to say things went alright.

We did. It was fun.

We were on Fox Good Day.

For all the world to see. Despite the early start time, I think we did alright.

Let me know if you want to hear us again. We’re open to nearly any kind of gig.

new works

For those who don’t know, The Weirdo Deluxe releases an album every year. The first four were pressed in limited quantities (of 200 or so) and mostly given away. An odd way to “make it” in the music biz, I know. Breaking that mold is The Silver Key.

Anyway, I’ve been knee-deep in the next record for awhile now. Even went to Nashville and worked with some fucking killer studio players there (nope, not country). I have no idea what will make the next record, but it’ll be out in August or so (like the rest) and it’ll be just as wildly eclectic as most of the other discs. Working title “Fully Body Kiss”.

Got a piano recently and all these songs are falling out of me.

gigs and stuff

Filed under: Music, Where We Play — Tags: — admin @ 6:48 pm

So, we had our first gig a couple weeks back. 8-piece band (2 guitars, 2 keyboards, 2 saxes, bass, drums – and most of us sang, too). The response was goo. KGSR played us that day and talked up the gig and the CD.

Next week we have three more performances:

FOX 7 NEWS

Monday at 7:45 a.m.

I’ll even get a bit to talk about the treasure hunt. And I’ll see what I can do to post clips on YouTube & link ‘em here.

Weds, MOMO’S

6-6:45

A happy-hour set, where we will rock it with a 5-piece band.

Saturday, RUTA MAYA

7-8

The 8-piece band again. More horns on more songs than last time. It’s gonna smoke. Great players in the band, un-rehearsed just enough to be exciting and dangerous.
